What's Actually in a Motor Test Report, and Why Keep It

A test report isn't paperwork for its own sake. It's the only objective record of what condition a motor was in the day it left the shop.

What gets tested before shipping

● No-load run: voltage, current, and vibration across all three phases
● Insulation resistance and polarization index: winding soundness over a sustained test
● Surge comparison: catches weak turn-to-turn insulation a megohm test can miss
● Vibration signature: a baseline for future comparison

Why it matters

It's documented proof of workmanship behind NEMA MG-1 and EASA AR100 quality standards, not a verbal assurance. If a warranty question comes up later, the report shows exactly what shipped, not what anyone remembers months later.

The use most people miss

A single reading tells you condition on one day. Compared against the report's baseline, it tells you a trend, and trends are what let a team catch degrading insulation before it becomes an unplanned outage. That's the difference between condition-based maintenance and just waiting for something to fail.

Where it should live

The report is only useful if it's findable. Attaching it to the asset's maintenance record, alongside the motor's serial number and installation date, means the next technician who tests that motor has something real to compare against instead of guessing whether a reading looks normal.
